Women’s ability to obtain and retain economic security is an issue we identify in our research, lift up in our social media, and invest in through our community grant program. As our soon-to-be released Status of Women in New Hampshire Report 2025 will highlight, New Hampshire’s high cost of living puts a disproportionate burden on women. Meet three of our 2024 grantee partners from around the state who support and empower women facing this challenge as well as many other significant and complex barriers to their economic security:
Head to Laconia and you will find Belknap House, either their shelter or transitional housing location, supporting homeless families (the majority of whom are women-led) to achieve self-sufficiency and independence through education and access to community resources. Additionally, Belknap House developed a wrap-around mentoring initiative specifically supporting mothers’ success in working toward their goals and maintaining independence once they have left the shelter.
Located in Dover and providing services in and outside of the region, the mission of Community Action Partnership of Strafford County (CAPSC) is “to reduce barriers to help clients improve their economic stability and well-being.” CAPSC oversees the Domestic Violence Housing Support Program which offers women in dangerous and abusive situations a path to financial security and independence. Since domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness among women and children, they are devastatingly and disproportionately impacted by the housing crisis in New Hampshire.
In Nashua, The Front Door Agency helps individuals and families break the cycle of poverty and achieve self-sufficiency and independence through education and by addressing obstacles to obtaining and retaining affordable housing. The Financial Empowerment Center program, specifically offered to women, provides individualized financial coaching support to help people reach their financial and career goals. While attending financial literacy classes is important, studies have shown that coaching makes a tangible difference in effectiveness and participant success.
We are proud to include these incredible organizations in our portfolio of partners. The goals common to all of them are to support women-led families in achieving housing stability and continued progress toward self-sufficiency and economic security.
