New Hampshire Women’s Foundation Director of Policy Sarah Mattson Dustin issued the following statement following this morning’s vote on HB 628:

The New Hampshire Women’s Foundation is disappointed by today’s New Hampshire Senate vote to send HB 628, establishing paid family and medical leave, to interim study. Today’s vote marks the end of the line for HB 628, the latest failure in nearly 20 years of efforts to set up paid family and medical leave.

Today the New Hampshire Senate missed the opportunity to pass a bill that would have lifted up New Hampshire’s working families through an entirely voluntary program. It missed the opportunity to make sure that new parents have time to bond with their children. It missed the opportunity to support elder caregiving in a rapidly aging state. It missed the opportunity to provide an essential tool to people in recovery.

The people of New Hampshire overwhelmingly support paid family and medical leave. We thank the 10 Senators who voted against sending HB 628 to interim study today. This legislation will be back, and we’ll keep working until we get it done.
